The official first day of Summer is still two days away, but oh it already feels like we have been into it for a week now. Here in Ardmore we have been busy. Hay time came and right after that our wheat was ready for harvest (and some of it still is). As soon as the wheat is out of the fields soybean seeds go in. Any remaining time is spent traveling to our local farmers markets. Right now we are only open on Fridays at our home store in Ardmore from 10-5. Feel free to catch us at any of the markets which are listed in my post from April.
We want to say, "Thank You!" for all your support with our chicken endeavor. On May 29th we took 82 pullets to the processor. Processor mornings come early…. 2:15AM to be exact. At that time the rooster hasn't even thought about crowing yet ;). By the time we load all of the chickens into crates and get them from their house and into the trailer it is 3:30AM and our 2 1/2 hour journey begins. We have to be at the processor right around 6AM due to USDA regulations. After the chickens have been plucked, cut up, and cooled down to around 40 degrees the packaging can begin. The cool thing is we can help! Moma and I got to clean gizzards, liver, hearts, feet, and necks and put them into bags. It was a fun experience! Our chickens were ready to come home around 2:00PM. Thanks to you I am proud to announce we have 120 more baby chicks growing right now. They will be ready in about 4 1/2 weeks.
In other news the garden has started bearing vegetables which we will have available for sale sometime soon. If you need any type of beef for the grill for a weekend get-together or the Fourth of July keep us in mind. Stay hydrated and cool this summer and we hope to see you soon.
